No, the vari grid is the bowl gouge attachment (and some people use it for spindle gouges too). You do want that one. The set that jclark linked earlier has all the essentials plus a couple other goodies (and I don't think there's a package without the extras available for less).

If money is super, super tight, you could get away with just the basic package and using the platform instead of the varigrind for the 40-40 method of sharpening the bowl gouge, but as you can see, it's a good value to get them together.
I’d go with the much more popular Oneway setup. It doesn’t include the skew jig but I have it and I never use it.
