For something brand new under $50, you're mostly going to find only unbranded stuff from China that would be nearly impossible to know the real quality of the pictures and the build of the camera itself. That one you found doesn't actually have an optical zoom, it just has a digital zoom which, on a product like that, probably suffers pretty badly from pixel degradation.

If you must stick to that price point, I would try to find a better camera, used. Maybe just ask around family and friends, because who actually uses point-and-shoot cameras anymore? People would probably be willing to sell them or give them away.

If you can go a little outside your $50 range, you can actually find name-brand products that would probably server you well, like this one.

You might be surprised to find that once you get down to Peru, everyone has a cellphone with a camera. My family is from South America and everywhere we visit, iPhones and Andriods, even in the poorest of neighborhoods. You might not actually get it stolen.
