Using expensive pens during your clinical years on the wards is a bad idea
a) fountain pens can drip and smear, this is annoying when you just want something written down, and they do not play well with white coats.
b) Fountain pens don't work well when you need to put pressure down (triplicate copies)
c) You are bound to lose a pen/let someone borrow a pen during your training.
I'm a huge pen addict (I've spent waay too much money on Jetpens). What I suggest to everyone who loves pens is to keep the fancy ones at home. When you are in a hospital you want something that writes fast, dries fast and leaves a consistent line. My favorite ink is the Uni JetStream ink. I use the following two pens during work
Uni Jetstream 0.7mm black

Uni Jetstream 4+1 multipen if you are feeling fancy
