Wow - good question. Tosca is a great piece of music - it's a bit intense for a first opera, but if you like drama in your movies, this is a good place to start with opera too.

The Pavarotti video is great, with wonderful singing... but Pav isn't exactly known for his acting, and the role doesn't suit his voice.

I think the best ones are with Domingo. He was famous for his Cavaradossi.

  • This one is the ultimate "traditional" production of Tosca. Wonderful singing and acting. Sample clip: Va, Tosca - the villain, Baron Scarpia, reveals his plan to rape Tosca and have Cavaradossi hanged, all to the background of a church processional. This is one of the most badass scenes in the show (also called the "Te Deum" for the music the chorus is singing in the background).

  • This other one also stars Domingo, and is shot "on location". Sample scene: Cavaradossi's torture and Scarpia's death - another great dramatic moment from this opera.

Enjoy!
