I love that you included Lip Balm in your emergency plan. I recently bought something like 50 tubes on Amazon for maybe $25. People talk about all sorts of post-disaster barter items and I'm pretty sure the value of a single tube of lip balm will skyrocket.

I like the idea of building my own kit because I'm more familiar with the items I have. I also find that pre-built kits often have odd quantities (too many band aids, not enough triangular bandages for example). I also agree with what other have said about getting training.

As you build your kit (and thinking about a longer term situation such as a CSZ event) there are some often overlooked items you might want to consider stocking up on as well.

Dental Emergencies: Tooth pain is the WORST so you might want to include something as basic as this Dental First Aid Kit which I've found at Bi-Mart for right around $15. I also added this emergency dental kit to my first aid supplies.

Eye Care: Extra prescription glasses / reading glasses and a bottle (or 2) of eye wash solution is great to have on hand. I've used it for removing debris from my cat's eye as well as wound irrigation. Some eye cups are nice to have as well.

Skin Protectant: If we are living in our back yards after CSZ, consider adding items such as bug repellent and sun screen.

Just a few thoughts. I'd be curious to hear some other ideas on what first aid items are often overlooked?
