I just ordered myself a Bern Watts w/ MIPS and, while I haven't received it yet, am very familiar with Bern helmets from years of working in a bike shop. For my riding, I definitely prefer the more skate/urban-style helmets versus the full-face mountain/moto-style helmets for a few reasons:

  1. Visibility. Full-face helmets constrain your vision, so being able to see your surroundings (while commuting or riding on streets) becomes a bit more difficult. You will have to tilt your head much further down to see your feet/what's immediately around your board.
  2. Protection. Compared to a standard bike helmet, the urban/skate style covers the occipital bone while the bike helmet does not. If you fall backwards or land on your back, an urban helmet will protect the bottom of your head much more reliably than a bike helmet. A full-face helmet will protect your face and jawbone, but have more or less the same protection for the rest of your head.
  3. Comfort. I find full-face helmets uncomfortable because they apply pressure to my face, pushing my cheeks and lips and kind of pulling on the skin over my cheekbones, pulling my eyelids slightly. I have a larger-than-average head that is very lumpy due to a surgery, so my issues are probably not universal.
  4. Weight. Full-face helmets are bulky and heavy, and you will definitely experience neck/shoulder strain after a long ride if you aren't used to wearing one.

Ultimately, I would encourage you to choose whatever is most comfortable for you while simultaneously being ANSI and CPSC certified. For urban riding, I encourage you to look into helmets that feature the MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) technology. If you're doing a lot of trail riding, a full-face helmet might be for you but I personally think they're a bit overkill unless you're doing some serious trails.

Edit: thanks for the gold, kind stranger!
