I started out using nest pads that looked like fake grass, which you can spray out with the hose when there's a broken egg, but they are kinda hard to get really clean. I bought this plastic pad last year, and have been pretty happy with it:

These are cushiony enough to use alone, but my girls like some fluff - I use fancy pine shavings with a little Flock Fresh from Standlee.
