I’ve used these successfully on two different rigs so far. You connect the 24 pin cable of the 2nd psu and either molex or sata from the first psu depending on the kind of adapter you buy. There’s no limit to how many power supplies you can daisy chain this way.
I second this. It seems what the op used previously those cords are poorly designed. I researched several of them and found a premium one made by Thermaltake and after reading issues of those melting. I purchased this Add2PSU and have been using it now for a month. I have this one. 2 Pack Synchronous Power Board sata Dual PSU Jumper Multiple Power Supply Adapter and Daisy Chain Connector add2psu Adapter with Sata ATX 24pin to Molex 4 Pin Connector(2pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08F9WGLP2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_95N6AXSP3HXT29BE17RN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Two pack for $15.89. It works well. Just make sure to have a single SATA connected from the main motherboard, connect it to this adapter and plug in the secondary PSU to it, so when the main is turned on, it sends a small short current to the 2nd to turn on.
Most of the online calculators i've now looked at seem to top out at 1075 to 1175 with the cpu and extras and cards at their worst peak if they arent throttled.
I think my existing 850 has 4 pcie cables, i ordered some 8 to 6 pin and 8 to 8 splitter cables off amazon in the meantime.
Sounds as if the cheapest method is to get another $129 80 gold psu and use two psu's.Also not sure if the two psus + full atx board will fit on the amazon rig i ordered.

Im a little uneasy about 2 psus and how to turn them on without frying things. But it sounds like using the 2 psu adapter (not the y cable thing) is the best route
I guess option b i could spend slightly more and try this corsair 1200 watt: https://www.newegg.com/corsair-hx-series-hx1200-cp-9020140-na-1200w/p/N82E16817139205?quicklink=true
