No. Avoid cheap suitcases and all in ones or anything with the same cheap $5 mechanism.
VPRO 3100 $99 $49 on sale is a good enough step up from the cheapo suitcase player.
Plus a pair of powered speakers if you don't already have any speakers.

will a suitcase style one be SO BAD as to discourage me from the hobby
Possibly, or you come back here asking why it's skipping or not working correctly since the cheap $5 mechanism to avoid is cheap toy quailty.
I just don't know if I want a turntable, speakers, and preamp clogging up my desk at this time.
Most entry level turntables have a built in phono preamp. You could get a small pair of powered speakers to go on either side of your monitor or laptop for stereo separation.
Turntables and speakers starting at $105 and $79.
AT-LP60X $105 plus 3.5" Edifier R33BT $79 are both compact for a desktop setup and the speakers will also sound good for playing music from your computer, tablet or smartphone.
You're welcome.
Or even lower cost options that are still decent enough to start with:
Turntable: VPRO 3100 $49 on sale from $99.

The small platter is the least of the issues with those type of cheapest table top or all in one turntables with built in speakers.
For a low budget consider a better $99 turntable on sale for $49 plus a better pair of passive speakers.
VPRO 3100 has a full size platter, is semi automatic and adds a diamond tip stylus, an MM moving magnet cartridge and an RIAA phono preamp, all of which the cheap Udreamer lacks.

AT-LP60X $88 > 3.5mm to 3.5mm aux audio cable $6 > G-Boom speaker.
Or a better automatic turntable that costs less than the $219 AT-LP60XBT: AT-LP3 $165 adds adjustable tracking force.
Or a better manual turntable for the same $219 cost of AT-LP60XBT: AT-LPW30TK $219.
Or for the cost of the $219 AT-LP60X you could get the AT-LP60X and a pair of powered speakers with Bluetooth:
For $83 they are a lower cost alternative to the also basic entry level Edifier R1280 series speakers. Maybe they have similar sound quality to the Edifiers, maybe they don't.
More low cost starter powered speakers options, 3.5" or 4" for a small room or desktop setup or 5.25" for a small to medium size room:

Better over $150 with remote:
Dual 4" mid bass driver Edifier D12 $149
Or Klipsch The One $159.
However a pair of Edifiers are around the same width so you are not really saving much or any space over the single speaker options unless you get a smaller portable speaker.
Edifier powered speakers:
A pair of speakers gives you stereo separation for stereo imaging and sound stage.
Or the Andover Spinbase can be placed under a turntable. However it costs $299 and may not sound any better.
RT83 > PA10 > Edifier R1280DBs will work however the $150 speakers will be a sound quality bottleneck for the $350 turntable. Ideally spend just as much or more on the speakers as on the turntable or buy used for half the cost.

If you must start with the low budget Edifiers then consider a later upgrade to better and often larger passive speakers and an amp or stereo receiver. Then move the Edifiers to your desk for computer speaker duty or another room for a pair of Bluetooth speakers. Or you could even start with lower cost Edifier R33BT $79 or Insignia $79 if that is your plan to later upgrade to better speakers up to or past the quailty of the RT83 turntable.

It's not. What cartridge and tonearm would you even try to install? Also, you would still be stuck with the cheap motor and small plastic platter.
The Journey and ITVS-750 seem to both have the same inexpensive mechanism.
The ITVS-750 may have a better built in speaker so it sounds at least better than the smaller suitcase player.
The sound quality of both of them is limited by the inexpensive ceramic cartridge.
Make sure the cue lever is down all the way. The bass heavy records won't skip on a better turntable with a better tonearm. The small bottle of cleaner may not do much, especially without a full rinse. Full soak wet clean to clean out the grooves and make sure it's not dirty records causing skipping.
If you are low on budget but want better playback and sound quality then get a low cost component turntable and a pair of low cost starter powered speakers.
VPRO 3100 $49 on sale from $99 has a full size platter, is semi automatic and adds a diamond tip stylus, an MM moving magnet cartridge and an RIAA phono preamp, all of which the Journey+ lacks.
