Hi guys, I got my first rpi a few days ago to replace an old pc that I was using as a media centre. I got a Raspberry Pi 4 B+, with a heat sink armour with double fan (just like this one).
The first thing that I did was to install OSMC. I have several external hdd each with their own power supply connected to an usb 3.0 hub, which in turn is connected to the rpi. I was able to access each drive and play/scan their content with OSMC/Kodi. It worked like a charm, way better than my old pc, and so I left it last night scanning all the content from the drives.
However, this morning I woke up and saw that the screen was blank, I was not able to connect to it with ssh either. I tried to reset the rpi, nothing happened, same problem. I saw that both the red and green light stayed on.
Things that I have tried:
- The first thing I did was to make a copy of my .kodi folder to windows and then reinstall OSMC from scratch. Maybe something got corrupted? But no, same issue with a fresh OSMC installation.
- I installed the Raspberry Pi OS on the same SD using etcher, I don't know, maybe something was wrong with the OSMC. Didn't hurt to try anyway. Same issue.
- I followed the Boot issues sticky. I used a second 2gb to flash the utility to recover the bootloader. Nothing happened, no green light flashing, no green screen.
- I saw someone recommend to re sit the back of the SD reader, tried that, same issue.
- I saw someone recommend pressing the cpu while booting, tried that, same issue.
Things that I have not tried:
- A different power supply. I only have one for the rpi, and I am not sure if a cellphone/mac one would help.
- I don't have a voltmeter, or any other similar tool. So I can't check if something is wrong with the board.
Things that I have noticed:
- Prior to this issue, the temp never went above 50c, averaging ~40c while being idle or scanning content.
- If I plug the rpi to power without the fans plugged to the gpio, both lights stay on. If then I plug in the fan, the green light is turned off.
- I haven't paid attention to the leds before this issue, but I think that the green one is lightly dimmer than the red.
Things that I wonder:
- Should I mark this rpi as dead?
- Is there something else to try?
- Could this be a factory defect?
- Or was it something that I did?
This issue got me down, because I was having fun with the rpi, and I was planning on getting more for other projects/self-hosting services.
I would appreciate any help or suggestion, thanks!
