The landlord is in the wrong business if he's this good and running some MITM attack. I mean does he have a Pineapple running, or is he doing some nmap and wireshark shit? Again if he knows it this well he should get a better job.
The key should only be obvious to someone who's looking to enter the apartment who didn't notify the tenant first. Also while it is possible to bypass the lockout, it's an unexpected pain in the ass for the assailant I would imagine.
That's where a motion detector and a breadboard kit can come in play, maybe add an alarm, LEDs, and snap a photo too. Again if someone comes into the apartment sets it all off and throws a fit it will be as obvious as the evidence is still tangible.
