I don’t understand why people are still recommending hard drives. Hard drives are old, they fail, and require a Y cable. SSDs will last much longer and don’t require a Y cable because they require minimal current. Take my advice and spend a tiny bit more for this - my exact setup.

Grand total of $46. That $9 difference is definitely worth having an open USB port, it’s quieter, and it will most definitely last longer.
