For those who a generator is an option, i.e. homeowner or renter with a yard, Amazon has a pretty decent generator on sale right now that will run your fridge/freezer and gadgets, and a window AC in the summer.

Being an inverter generator it is really quiet, something you and your neighbors will appreciate. You can get open frame generators in this wattage range for a bit less, but they're extremely loud and less efficient.
I run a 5000btu window unit in mine, either through shore power or a 2000w inverter generator. (Texas) It'll work for the summer but on really, really hot days you'll still feel some heat. However, it will work and keep everything you own from melting and being damaged. They are both inexpensive and easily replaced. Make sure to get a decent, outdoor rated extension cord.
