just got the 400i 2020's this weekend and so far I'm impressed with the quality vs. price point
I had the original 400i and I swapped out the pads for these:

Unfortunately unless you buy new rings, you have to destroy the stock pads to swap out for new pads. These new pads improved the bass response imo, and made me fall in love with these cans and planars in general. I loved the fact that I could crank them high without distortion (using an O2 Amp with a focusrite 2i4 interface)
Problem is the build was SHIT. The Yokes/Yolks (spelling?) cracked after a few months, I replaced them, those cracked as well. I gave up on them because of the build and went to some dynamics (phillips fidelio, fantastic build, great bass but distorted easily on my O2 amp)
Once I found out they put out a 2020 version with an improved headband and yoke with the same driver, I bought them immediately. However I was suspicious because they cost $169 vs. the $350 ($449 retail) I paid for the original 400i (ebay) How could they improve the build, keep the same driver and price them lower while still having the originals listed on hifiman's site for $449? Made no sense, but I took the plunge, bought them. Got them a few days ago and swapped the pads for the ones I listed above and so far I'm impressed. I'm getting mixed reviews that say these are 4xx drivers which have less bass than 400i drivers and vice versa. I have my old 400i's still at my old place and haven't done a comparison yet but I'm tempted to do a driver swap since the cups would easily fit and my only issue was the build and if I could have the original 400i drivers I loved with a new build I'm going to try the swap. Essentially meaning I paid $169 for a new headband, but fuck it. Anyone else think it's worth the effort?
