Keep everything lightly oiled. Use a few drops of light oil when sharpening. Keep away from water. Let the stones do the work. Only press hard enough for the stones to cut steel, this could be very light force.

Any $5 oil stone will work wonders.

If you want to get crazy sharp you can get a $5 ceramic pocket stone.
