Yes, aggravating indeed! I thought this was all sorted out, but no.
The funny thing is that the two Plugable 2.5 GbE adapters I own have different revisions as well. Thankfully, both of them use the NCM driver.

(Trying to find a minimal setup for when I’m not at my desk and editing videos … one of my ports is occupied by a Thunderbolt SSD, so I wanted something simple for only Ethernet and power.)
I’ll comment again when I get a chance to test it out.
Update: that Cable Matters adapter I mentioned previously is working great. It has the 8156 and uses the NCM driver. It’s a solid option if you (or anyone else) is looking for Ethernet + PD charging.
