Just got rid of cable after finally getting fiber internet and am in search of an antenna for local news/weather. We have most streaming services so we would just use it time to time for information. Obviously Reddit was the first place to start my research. I found the info about rabbit ears reports so here is mine. https://www.rabbitears.info/searchmap.php?request=result&study_id=820402

I read maybe a simple rabbit ear style would work and an amplified setup might actually hurt my goal since the stations are all so close by. We are in a hilly rural area with trees around. Thanks for the help. Something off of Amazon would be easy.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS to you for getting away from the greedy evil monopolist corrupt pay TV criminals!

At only 9 miles you are close enough to all those GOOD rated signals that you should have no problem with a basic rabbit ear antenna, including maybe even with that oddball rf Channel 2 signal. I'm amazed that a major tb network affiliate station chooses to be on the lowest possible VHF channel but in your case it just might be ok.

It's always hard to predict what antenna will work well but an easy low-cost zero risk antenna to try would be a $10 rabbit ear antenna from a local store like Walmart (or Amazon) where you can easily get a refund and try something else if the rabbit ear antenna doesn't work well enough.

And yes, you are so close that an amplifier should not be needed and may actually cause problems due to signal overloading, etc.

So start without any amplifiers, you can always add one later if you absolutely have to.

Look for a rabbit ear antenna that looks essentially just like one of these:

................

$16 @Amazon, Philips brand Modern Loop Rabbit Ear Indoor Tabletop tv Antenna, 15 inchendable Dipoles, VHF/UHF, 4 foot Coax Cable, model SDV7114A/27

........

$10 Philips brand Rabbit Ear TV Antenna with VHF Dipoles plus a UHF Loop, 5 foot Coax Cable, model SDV8201B/27

.........

$10 @Amazon, RCA ANT111E rabbit ear Indoor TV Antenna, also Non-Amplified

https://www.amazon.com/RCA-ANT111E-Digital-Antenna-Non-Amplified/dp/B000HKGK8Y/

  • but note that essentially the same model RCA ANT111Z is $15 at Home Depot and is non-returnable for some reason, so watch out for store return policies like that.

......

Just make sure it's the type that has the long telescopic rods plus a separate oval or round UHF element, and the longer the rods the better for that long wavelength rf channel 2 signal.

If you have an attic space available that would be an excellent place for any kind of an antenna, including a rabbit ear antenna.

As others here have already said, that rf channel 2 signal is probably the only one that will give you any trouble considering how close you are to the tv transmit towers.

Let us know what you tried and how it worked and we'll go from there if you have problems.

Good luck!
