  • clean the area (skin, not the wound) with alcohol wipes -- this will help remove any remaining lotions, soap, oils, etc.
  • make sure the area is completely dry before applying
  • try to avoid getting the area wet for 24-48 hours -- when showering within that timeframe, it helps to either wrap the limb in plastic wrap or cut off the bottom of a plastic bag, stick your limb inside it, then secure the top & bottom with duct tape
  • I usually slap on a compression sleeve (you can also diy one by cutting off the toe part of a pair of socks) for the first day or two to help make sure things are sticking well
  • personally, I don't love actual steristrips -- I've had much better luck just cutting up standard bandaids or medical tape into strips, and just using that instead. My personal go-to is this one (3M micropore paper tape)
  • you can also try applying an additional set of strips running parallel to the wound as reinforcements (so, not in contact with the wound, just being used to keep the ends of the strips in place)

I don't use patches, but I had a mole removed last year and really had problems keeping the wound properly covered at first. (Apparently I had a reaction to the adhesives used by some band-aids.)

A doctor eventually recommended paper surgical tape (example), which is designed to not bother the skin too much. If the other suggestions don't work out, that might be another way to keep it in place? (But I think it's optimized for frequently changing the tape, which might not be what you want for a patch?)
