Do the Joy-Cons in the Joy-con grip feel comfortable in your hands? If so, you don't need a Pro controller. Me, personally? I hate how the Joy-Cons in the grip feel, and I absolutely need to play with a Pro controller.
Nintendo's own Pro controller is probably the one I consider the best of the bunch - it has a great form factor, and it's one of only a few wireless controllers with built-in Amiibo reader AND the ability to wake the Switch from sleep. You can see my full review here. However, there are a few other options worth considering.
First, 8BitDo has their line of controllers that are quite excellent. I reviewed the Pro+, but it looks like their product line has moved on to the Pro 2. Much cheaper than Nintendo's own controller, and it has some extra features Nintendo's controller doesn't have (PC compatibility, back paddle buttons, button-mapping, saved controller profiles, modifiable vibration, turbo function). However, this controller apparently lacks gyro controls (odd, since the Pro+ had great motion controls), which are really great in the Splatoon games, first-person shooters, and Super Mario Galaxy. Also, no wake feature or amiibo support. Boo.
Another solid alternative is the Exlene Wireless Pro Controller. I'm kinda' sad to see Exlene's official site is down, and I hope it doesn't mean they've gone out of business, because they made damn good budget controllers (full disclosure: these guys provided me with some review product a while back). Not only is Exlene's controller super-cheap, it can also wake the Switch from sleep and read Amiibo figurines, unlike damn near every third-party wireless controller on the market! This also supports PC and mobile device playing via an included wireless dongle, and a turbo function. I don't like the form factor as much as Nintendo or 8BitDo's controllers, and the controller feels a bit "cheap" to me in places, but my girlfriend strongly prefers this one over Nintendo's, so it may be a matter of personal preference. I think there were a few others that come highly-recommended, but I haven't gotten hands-on with them yet.
Anyway, that's my thoughts regarding Switch controllers.
