This is the first feature film I’ve been the cinematographer on. It was an easy gig to land since I was also the director (and writer, production designer, editor, sound designer, special effects artist, etc... the joys of micro-budget filmmaking!)
It's called Blood From Stone and it's sorta like Leaving Las Vegas meets Natural Born Killers but with vampires. Critics have called it everything from horror (obviously) to thriller, neo-noir, romance, dark comedy, and even a neo-western. So, from a cinematography perspective, it was an intense one! I'll lay out the basics here and if anyone wants to ask questions feel free.
And, if you want to watch it (I'd love if some here were to check it out) it's on Amazon Prime, Tubi, Roku for free and a ton of other platforms for rental. Here's the Amazon link since that seems to be most popular: https://www.amazon.com/Blood-Stone-Vanja-Kapetanovic/dp/B08J7M1P78
If you're not in the US check for it on PrimeVideo.com and it should be there.
About the cinematography:
Because it's about vampires the whole thing takes place at night except for one scene. It also takes place in Vegas but another big chunk of it it takes place in the desert which was tricky. Especially since this was a micro-budget film and our lighting kit was whatever we could scrounge up.
KIT:
I used the F5 w/ Cookes for the majority of the film but used the A7s w/ Sony Primes for night exteriors in the desert and car interiors. It's insane low-light capabilities allowed me to shoot those with almost entirely available light (even just moonlight) and get clean horizon lines in the middle of the Nevada desert. Some Neat Video denoiser in post polished it up beautifully. All the car interiors we covered the non-visible windows in diffusion to get rid of camera shadows on the actors.
That's the basics. If you want me to go into any more detail, have other questions, or just want to tell me you love it/hate it/don't care at all about any of this, please do!
Thanks for checking it out.
