No, that won't work. What you need is a receiver (something to point your remote at), which is connected to a POWERED IR repeater (meaning it plugs into an electrical outlet). That repeater is then connected to your Sony with a cable like this:

In fact, my installer put one of those ugly little flasher things on the front panel of my receiver (over the remote sensor). I removed that, and instead connected the repeater directly to my receiver with the cable I linked above.
