Most versions of the UV-5R will receive the same bands but just like them, this can only transmit 2m/70cm bands. My first Baofeng was actually a 2m/1.25m (220MHz)/70cm version of the UV-5R. The signs around Baofeng and their clones is deserved but not in whole. Thankfully Amazon has started to enforce companies selling anything radio related on their site to provide FCC ID's for their products and it seems to have cleaned things up from some larger sellers of them. There are some out there with somewhat decent filtering that actually meet the regs, they're just not the cheapest models out there and are usually hard to figure out which is which without YouTube reviews of specific brands/models. I would look up some reviews just searching UV-5R and try to find one that's actually legal. Also, if you're going the Baofeng route, stick with something compatible with the UV-5R since 90% of the accessories out there are for that model.
