Yes, the smartphone app for the Leaf SV/SL ("NissanConnect EV & Services") will show you charge status, start a charge, notify you when charging starts and ends, turn on climate control to pre-cool or pre-heat the car, and more. You should download it and check it out. If you opt not to use the app, the car still has a charging timer you can set from within the car, that lets you plug in whenever you want and charging will only start at the time you've set.

Stopping charging at 80% or any other percentage is not a feature of the car, the app, or most smart chargers.

Most configurations of the 2018 Leaf come with a 240V charger, so you wouldn't need to buy one of your own. All Tesla EVs come with one too. I think this will be common in the future.

I too would recommend a simple and cheap charger without all the smart features. It's a glorified extension cord between your car and an electrical outlet, and there's no need to make it anything more than that.

I've used this one, which is UL listed, American made, attractive, easy to use, easy to install (just plug it in, one screw optional wall mounting) with a 3 year warranty, and costs less than any of the options you linked:

You'll be fine if the Leaf is all you're charging. Actually running 40A load continuously on a 45A circuit is likely to trip the breaker (80% of max is the rule), but a Leaf won't ever draw more than 27.5A. That's why any 30A or larger EVSE is sufficient for this car.

P.S. This is the charger I use for my Leaf, I think it's nicer than the Juiceboxes: https://www.amazon.com/Siemens-VC30GRYU-Versicharge-Electric-Flexible/dp/B00MFVI92S

Thanks.

Ok, I found this for $430, but it's indoor only, and had only a 14' cord.

This for $499 is indoor/outdoor, but has only a 20' cord.

Unfortunately, neither would meet my needs -- my parking space can barely be reached using my current 23' cord, and I can't practically install a new electrical anything that's any closer.

Funny that a search for "EVSE" didn't find either of these.

BTW, I provided these links using my phone.

If you don't want a future charger to be stolen, you can either hardwire it to your house, or you can have an external power outlet with a locking door/cover.

I have experience with this Siemens charger. It's 30 amps, so not the fastest charge rate, but it's plenty enough for the Leaf. If you plan on getting a different car in the future with faster charging capability than the Leaf, you may want to look at 45 amp and higher chargers.

You won't find too many chargers cheaper than the Siemens with a 20ft cord, but there are some so feel free to shop around. If you only need a 14ft cord, those will save you about $50, but I find the extra length is useful.

  1. You don't want that EVSE. It's only half as powerful as you need to charge at full L2 speed (which is still 3-4 hours), and it's from a no-name Chinese company with literally no website or contact information.

  2. I recommend this one which also just plugs in, you don't need new wiring if you already have somewhere to plug it in. It can be mounted on a wall or a pole with just two screws.

  3. That doesn't look like a 240V 50A outlet. It looks like a NEMA TT-30 RV outlet, which is 125V 30A. That would not be right for charging a car.

  4. Do you drive less than 50 miles a day round trip? That's who the Leaf is for. Anything more and you'll have trouble.

This one from Amazon has served me well for many years and multiple LEAFs. It's also the Wirecutter blog's top recommended EVSE.

Why are some $700 and then this is $289?

  1. 16 amps * 240 volts = 3.8 kW. You would buy a car that can charge at 6.6 kW, plug it into this charger that can only supply 3.8 kW, and negate the extra you paid for the faster charger in the car. And your car will take twice as long to charge.

  2. It's made by a no-name Chinese brand with no website, no contact information, basically doesn't exist. And the cable looks far too thin for a car charger, compare it to all the other ones you found. Risks setting your house on fire.

You don't have to spend $700, there are plenty of 30+ amp chargers for $400-500. I like the Siemens VersiCharge myself.

Here's my full list of stuff an SL comes with that an S does not:
