So I have had a honing guide similar to those $15 ones, and I had similar problems to what people report on Amazon, sides not lining up properly, etc. I used to have such problems I basically gave up sharpening. I *THINK* I might just go with the trend guide. Its $50, which is more than I want to spend, but less than a Veritas, and looks to be of buy-it-for-life quality.

I think I might get this set of stones (again with amazon though, would love to buy from an actual woodworking supplier here in the states), but maybe I don't need all these grits?

My chisels are a mix of mid-grade craftsman, and some nice marples, don't actually know their metallic composition if I am honest.
