Looking at LTE bands is a start, any phone without band 13 probably won't work for Verizon. Verizon (and AT&T) also have a whitelist system. AT&T has a public list (though it may not be updated anymore), Verizon I don't think has a public list. If it's not a model sold domestically (in a US store, or US-based website that doesn't sell imports) it likely will not work on Verizon.

Best rugged option is probably Galaxy Xcover 6 Pro. It's not really so rugged you can run it over with a truck but there are additional cases available for it.
