1.6 requires a lot more soldering to install a modchip. if you're not very proficient with a soldering iron, I would recommend going the soft mod route.

you need a usb to xbox controller adapter, a usb flash drive that the xbox can read/write and a copy of one of the 4 games that can be used to run the soft mod.

mr.mario has a great tutorial on using rocky5's softmod installer

once you get the softmod installed, you can back up your eeprom.bin file and use ftp to copy it to your hard drive. once you backup your eeprom, you can use fatxplorer or xboxhdm23usb beta 4 to partition and format a new hdd on your pc

if you upgrade to a sata drive, you'll need an ide to sata adapter and a 24 inch 80 wire ide cable.

xboxhdm23usb was a breeze to use, but I have had a hard drive that it didn't want to cooperate with and I ended up using fatxplorer to partition and format the disk, using the files from xboxhdm to populate the c and e drives and just used xboxhdm23usb to lock the drive after everything was finished.

after you get the new hdd formatted, partitioned and locked with your eeprom, just replace the original hdd and boot the xbox like normal and rocky5's installer will walk you through the rest.
