The footprint of the tent intentionally is wider than the rain-fly, so why would that part of the tent NOT be waterproof? The rain guard is engineered to not cover that part. Even if following the instructions meticulously and perfectly, it is not possible to totally cover the tent with the correct sized 6-person 10x9 foot rain-fly.
I have my tent set up the same way as this person (tighter guy-line tying IMO on my tent) and he didn't have a leaking tent https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLv-Vb6_Qug (This is a video I watched before buying the tent). His tent is not leaking in heavier rain, why is mine if I have things set up correctly?
Do you work for Coleman? :D j/k. Please look at how this rain-fly is designed: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006GJ8PFG The footprint of the tent intentionally is wider than the rain-fly. Other recreational tents I have are still waterproof when advertised as waterproof. Coleman does not make a great tent for the price if it doesn't do what it advertises. FWIW, I'm not expecting this to be a Springbar or a Kodiak, but at least not everything getting soaked in light to moderate rain.
