You can set it to beep for a voltage between 2.7-3.8V so you know when your battery is low. Generally I have it set to 3.5V. It doesn't protect your battery though, it only beeps to let you know to stop discharging it asap.
That only works when you can hear the beep so make sure you get is close to you fairly often once you know the battery is low. That's why I have mine set to 3.5V because that gives me some time to hear it and bring it in.
