We adopted a small (13 lb) rat terrier/chihuahua mix this past February. She had her front left leg amputated after it healed twisted from an accident she was in prior to adoption. As far as making the decision to amputate, we fortunately didn't have to do that, so I can't really help you there. But if you would like an opinion, I would say I would much rather amputate than put my pup through a year or more of surgeries and recovery. Not to mention the potential cost long term.

She is 100% a dog in that she loves going on walks and playing--basically anything a four legged dog does, she can do too, just at shorter intervals. When we go on walks, we bring a sling to put her in if she gets too tired and can't finish the walk home. She will often sprint across the yard to bark at the dog next door, and she loves playing fetch. We elevate her food bowl so she doesn't have to bend down on her remaining leg, and that's really the only thing we've had to do for her that's different from our other dogs. Rugs are helpful, as she sometimes slips on our laminate flooring. Overall we haven't had to do much different with her.

Dogs carry most of their weight on their front legs, so if you do decide to amputate, keep your pup at a good weight so her remaining leg doesn't have extra to do. We also have her on a joint supplement (glucosamine) to help improve her joints and mobility. Depending on where you live, there are options for physical therapy after amputation as well.

If you go through with the amputation, there is a wonderful tripawd community here and on the main website, at tripawds.com. There is lots of information on the website as well; everything from exercise to diet and nutrition for tripawds. Let me know if you have any more questions, I'd be happy to help! :)
