Depending on the trip I switched to using a hammock and underquilt instead of a tent and sleeping bag. It's way more packable, comfortable, and inexpensive although it limits you to places you know you can hang it. The underquilt I bought is square instead of coccoon shaped but opens all the way up so when I'm car camping with cots I can use it either as bedding or as a comforter.
