I call them wonder clips. Joanne's and such want and absolutely outrageous price for them. But you can find them way cheaper on Amazon. I'm totally happy with the ones I got from Amazon. these are the ones I got and they are just as good if not better than the name brand ones I have.

My recommended beginner project is a pillowcase because those are suuuper easy to make and very forgiving.
I think that first of all it's good to think about what things youre most interested in sewing because those would require different tools:
Do you want to make: - Clothing? - Bags? - Random things like pillowcases and scrunchies? - Upholestery and curtains?
And once you get into that territory, what kinds of things do you want to make? If you want to make clothing, does that mean hoodies? Ball gowns?
Thinking about that stuff is useful when determining what to buy.
But in general, some supplies you will need pretty universally are:
. Fabric . Something to cut fabric with (either scissors or a rotary cutter with a rotary mat, or both!) . Pins and clips to hold your fabric together (both are good in different situations).
