Hello, I've been trying to troubleshoot an issue that I'm experiencing with multiple RPi Zero W modules for a few days now and I've run out of ideas. Essentially, I'm creating a headless server to SSH into for a project I've wanted to work on for a while and they freeze every time I try to do
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
I figured my SD card was bad (Cheap Microcenter SD card from a few years ago) so I bought a pack of new ones from here which were actually the recommended ones from this article but I'm having the same issue. I'm running the latest Raspberry Pi OS Lite from the Raspberry Pi Imager.
Both chips I tested were purchased roughly at the same time a little over a year ago from microcenter, so I don't think they're both bad in the same way but I guess it's possible.
I've heard lack of power could cause this problem even though I'm using a 2.5A power supply which I bought straight from a manufacturer in China so I decided to try a few higher end phone bricks I have laying around as well as an Anker powerbank and finally my lab bench power supply. I noticed the Pi uses around 0.1A idle, ~0.17A under load during the install but once it freezes, the power consumption stays at 0.22A and the CPU gets hot to the touch after leaving it plugged in. That kind of power consumption should be achievable with any power brick I own so it doesn't seem likely that is the issue.
It doesn't freeze in the exact same spot every time, but it's pretty close. It never seems to get past the raspberrypi-kernel package.
Does anyone have any ideas I could try? I'm going to microcenter tomorrow to grab another board because I'm out of ideas but I'm not confident that will fix the issue.
16 gb card is plenty for this purpose These were the ones I got
