You can! I did it with my Nexus 7 tablet (2013, but device shouldn't matter), and it works great.

First, I got this USB adapter to connect from my tablet to the wireless adapter.

Then I'm able to use this Alfa AWUS036NEH WiFi adapter, and it appears as wlan1.
