I have the same setup and have run into this exact problem before (and I shattered my tank too). My recommendation is to buy a couple of the tools in the link below. It is a pair of ceramic tweezers with a built in grip. Use one tool to secure the base of the tank and one to remove the cap. Keep them on hand wherever you go.
