Of your top 2 choices, I'd recommend the macbook because the cpu will outperform the chromebook cpu by a significant margin (I don't know benchmarks offhand, but a quick google search should help with specific numbers).

You might also take a look at the thinkpads
1. Lenovo x250: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkPad-i5-5300U-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B07FZ3WYQ1
2. Lenovo T440: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Thinkpad-T440-Ultrabook-Professional/dp/B073WVRDJT

The x250 cpu is one generation newer than the T440, but its screen is smaller (12 inch vs the 14inch t440). Both have double the amount of ram of the macbook.

In general, I recently learned to not discount the older cpu performance when you start to look at things like a chromebook or other celeron based hardware. serverbuilds.net helped me with the general concepts of buying used too if you'd like more ideas when shopping.
