People are charging $100 to update the firmware? It takes less than 10 mins to do. That's insane... I recently a lot of tweets regarding this PCIE 4.0 adapter from Amazon, and it's been working well for a lot of people. It might be worth a shot if you have a desktop PC laying around.
I'm not sure if you're still looking for one, but I saw online that a lot of people had success updating their drive with this PCIE internal adapter from Amazon. I haven't personally tried it, but it's worth a shot.
You can also use something like this if you have a desktop PC that supports it. https://www.amazon.com/AMPCOM-Adapter-40Gbps-Desktop-Speed/dp/B0876MLNY6/ref=sr\_1\_3?crid=3FNY31FSBSIEB&dchild=1&keywords=pcie+4.0+m.2+card&qid=1628010920&sprefix=pcie+4%2Caps%2C187&sr=8-3
