I wanted to share my favorite way to play Melee on console: using a Wii + Wii-to-VGA cable + a PC CRT!

The result? Lagless, crisp, portable Melee setup. It takes a bit more finagling than your average setup, but it's worth it (especially for streaming).

What you need:

  1. Nintendo Wii (models with GameCube backwards compatibility).
  2. A PC CRT with a VGA out.
  3. Wii to VGA (currently unavailable on Amazon but I saw some here on this random website).
  4. 3.5mm Female to 2-RCA Audio, something like this. This is for audio.
  5. PC speakers or headphones with an aux, to be used with the cable above for audio.

Here's a photo of my capture card setup + a screenshot from an OBS capture. I use the XCapture-1 external card, since it has VGA in/out as a passthrough.

The CRT I'm using is the a HP Pavilion mx50 P1282A VGA CRT. It was a hand-me-down from my dad's office years ago. If you browse Goodwill you may be able to find a PC CRT.

I use the GoXLR audio mixer for my stream, so I have the Aux go directly into that, which goes into my headphones for streaming.

This method is MUCH cheaper than buying one of those uber expensive GameCube component cables or buying the CRTs that work with them. I love bringing this to Smash fests and tourneys (back when we used to attend those in person...).
