So I've had multiple traditional duffel bags for the gym, camera bags for my camera gear, and laptop backpacks for every day use and I came close to finding one bag that can do all these things with the Timbuk2 Quest duffel/backpack, I pretty much just wish it had better backpack straps and a laptop compartment.
Yes, I often place my bag on gross floors so I do like the backpack straps on the other side.
With the Timbuk2 Quest in duffel orientation I'm able to open the main compartment and peruse through all my gear at once. With the big independent shoe compartment being on top combined with this camera cube insert I'm able to store and quickly access my camera in it pretty securely while wearing the bag in backpack orientation. I also do store my gym shoes in the shoe compartment sometimes but I put in a cheap drawstring bag as kind of a liner too to keep it a bit more sanitary.
