I use the Malone saddle rack on my Outback as my kayak is heavier than the weight restriction on most J-bars. It works out really well and I can get my 78lb kayak up and down by myself with no issues. I rest the front of the kayak on the hatch, then get at the back end and just push it up onto the rack. Strap it down with tie down straps and I use a small ratchet tie down strap for front and back.
