I am sure I'll be destroyed by proper audiophiles, but let's break it down:

USB ROCKBAND MICS

The mics I have owned and how well they play rockband:

  • LIPS: pretty bad. Pickup and range is spotty, and basically no compression makes it not serviceable
  • RB2 Mic: stalwart rock hardware. Not great, but never felt cheated with performance. Unfortunately, age is destroying mine and it sounds like a crackly mess and will be retired with honor
  • M.I.C.: totally acceptable and nice to have the buttons handy instead of wrangling a controller. Though buttons kinda suck, so maybe a B- overall

REAL MICS

I think going for a "real mic" to pipe through your console is kinda overkill. It's easy to go overboard and spend a lot of money on something you're not going to get a lot of value from. That being said, I've been batting around the idea of micing my living room to stream vocals, so I do have some thoughts.

  • $50 tier: Blue Snowball decent pickups, decent quality. I usually have to go into post to clean up some of the audio for youtube, but this is a great entry level mic and I adore mine
  • $200 tier: Blue Yeti Overkill, but awesome. It's on my dream list, but I don't think I'd break it out for rockbanding. This model also has XLR inputs so if you want to continue down the overkill route, this might be the one for you.

I don't have an educated opinion on going full overkill with an XLR setup, but have been considering getting a little mixer to try and run audio magic.

For ear to ear type things you're going to really want 2 separate mics, a normal stereo mic just won't give you really noticeable stereo sound.

Assuming that you're recording on a computer, something like 2 of these would be better in my opinion.

In the future, something like this would be good before stepping up into something more professional.

Blue Snowball is a good start. You generally want to look at wide diaphragm condenser mics for wind instruments.
