For those kinds you can dremel the for lack of a better word, spokes of the top so it can be tightened lower than it normally can. Then you replace the wingnut with a normal nut. Like this. That was the thread I found that let me know that plumber's plugs are a good thing to use to recap at least grande sized lamps. But unfortunately mine didn't turn out well. It wouldn't seal good enough. So I got this kind (though not that specific one, that was just the first link I found to show a pic of the type. I forget what size diameter is needed) and it works perfectly and the cap sits down over it just fine.
These kind of plumber's plug works great. I use it (though make sure you measure and get the right diameter. That's not the link of mine but just an example of the kind I used) on my color changing grande that I did a magma tower gookit in, becasue I wanted to be able to keep opening it easily to fine tune the surfactant.
