I ended up returning the ecobee and getting a Sensi wifi thermostat instead which worked in my setup.
I'm all about a Sensi! I have one in my primary home as well as two previous rentals.
It's infintely programmable, down to the hour. You can create as many schedules as you like: I have about 6 heat and cool schedules. Heat, Heat Out of Town, Cool, Cool out of town, Cool 2.0 (it's a less aggressive a/c schedule). Also you can set the fan to run for a specific number of minutes every hour.
And it doesn't try to take over your life like the Nest with all that eco-crap learning shit. Guests can just walk RIGHT UP TO IT and hit the temp up or down. I have heat/cool programmed so that they come on at reasonable temps every morning so guests have to manually reset it. So if they jack it to 62 it resets to 78 at 6am. Every day! The rental house we just bought has a Nest and a Yale lock and I hate them both. I had to fight them just get control. I prefer a Sensi and a cheap Amazon smart lock.
