Don't rely on the hand crank and tiny solar panel on a radio. If you can afford it get one like the Midland ER300 that has a 18650 lithium ion rechargeable battery and slot for regular batteries. You can recharge it from a car or any USB power source.
That being said I have a Kaito similar to that one I bought about 5-6 years ago and the NiMH battery is still good but I can't capacity test it since it comes in a pack with 3 cells. I plan to upgrade to the ER300. I have tons of 18650 cells for flashlights. Good ones llast for years. I just tested some that are 11 years old and the have 90% of their original capacity.
