I have one of these https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Portable-External-STEA2000400/dp/B00TKFEE5S and im thinking about getting on of these if it has enough power https://www.simplecom.com.au/simplecom-ch345ps-aluminium-4-port-usb-3-0-hub-with-individual-switches-and-power-adapter.html
1TB SSD drives are now sub 150 bucks, buy one of those, use that as your primary internal drive, will speed up games and operating system.
Use HDD USB as extra storage, manually move older games rarely played to that.
$58 for 2TB HDD USB or 4TB for $89.

The 2 TB model in this link is popular for what you're asking. It takes a little fiddling, but is supposedly not too complicated. I've been meaning to do it myself when I can afford it. Check out the amazon comments or a simple google search should find the answer.
