For mail there are a few options, a mail tote, a little napkin holder hung on the wall to stick mail on, if you have a closet near the entrance you can do an over the door rack thing, have one for mail and fill the rest with shoes.
There are also stackable shoe boxes you can get on Amazon that can preserve your collection and have a cute way to display:
Or, if you're more like me and HATE seeing stuff stored in clear containers, solutions like these for shoes might be better:

Shop around, I'm sure there are cheaper versions of each, these are just what was on my wishlist for the apartment I'm moving to.
The cubbies also provide convenient surface space for a mail organizer too (or, a tucked away cubby), and provide a ton of storage for other stuff for a relatively small footprint.
When it comes to breaking down packages that's more a matter of follow through. Designate a space that is out of the way and easily concealed, break down the boxes as soon as they come in and tuck the collapsed box where it needs to be until it goes out to recycling.
