Cut the cord this week - got us this: http://www.amazon.com/Paper-Thin-Leaf-Indoor-Antenna/dp/B004QK7HI8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344447147&sr=8-1&keywords=antenna set it up in the attic and tied it in to the prewired cable, voila. it picks up so much. Set up a HTPC for the rest of things. Au revoir, expensive tv subscriptions!
Now we just have to figure out how to watch Pittsburgh football out here.
People are recommending an antenna which is good if you have the space. If you don't have the space and are somewhat near a broadcasting station (google for a broadcast map of your area) then these are great. Often broadcasts have a better picture quality than cable.

Alternatively there is usually HD/SD streams posted in game threads.
I dropped cable about a year ago and haven't looked back.
At first I used this. It worked very well. With enough adjustment I was able to get all of the networks. It helps if you can put it in a window.
Then I discovered that my TV has a built in QAM tuner. Basically I can just plug the coax cable straight into my TV and get all networks, TBS, Discovery HD, KET, weather channel, and a few others... all in perfect HD. My TV is nothing special, just an LG 42" plasma that I bought about 3 years ago.
As for streaming, I pay for amazon prime and netflix. I have an xbox and can stream lots of live sports through the ESPN app. There are also tons of sites that stream just about any tv show or live sports event you want to watch. There are lots of good options out there for media streaming... roku, apple tv, boxee box, etc.
There are times where it is a pain in the ass, but for the most part I don't feel like I'm missing anything. I pay insight 45 a month for 10.0 mb internet as opposed to the 100 I used to give them. Now if HBO would just come out with a stand-alone HBO subscription my life would be complete. Until then, I'll just keep streaming Game of Thrones...
