I run an fm transciever setup so I have access to more channels and therefore don't have to listen to every hunter and hick in the vicinity of my antenna.

You'll have to select an antenna based on the frequency range you want to run and use an SWR meter to get everything tuned in. It's not the cheapest setup but I've never had an issue from ICOM products. This might be way overkill for what you're looking for but it's what I have experience with.
