Hello there, I recently posted about how I finally bit the bullet and purchased an SLR 680. Then I had to deal with finding a good bag/case that fit my requirements:

  1. Not ugly.
  2. Less than $100, but hopefully much less than that.
  3. Structured in some way to reduce stress on the flash/sonar portion.
  4. As small as possible since the 680 is already a beast.

I searched through this subreddit and saw that you could either DIY one or pray/hope that Unit Portables bag goes up for big and be willing to shell out nearly the same price as the camera. So DIY here we go. I took inspiration from these two posts: by u/HoldingOnToTime and by u/Persepolis135/ aka take a Nintendo Switch case or something similar and add foam.

I was going to go with a Switch case (ala u/Persepolis135) but realized it needed to be a case that would also allow for Switches with grips attached (funnily enough that's how my Switch is) but I also really am not a fan of it looking obviously like a Switch case. And the CD case that u/HoldingOnToTime used was too large for me. Also saw from u/pola-dude that you could use a Lowepro ProTactic Utility 200 AW bag, but similarly too large for me. Then I found Retrospekt that sell the SLR 680 Colorblock Camera Bag: Black or Cream/Grey/Orange. Bingo.

So I took 1 inch Polyethylene Foam and cut it down to first fit within the bag (interior is a bit less than 2 inches. Then cut out portions for the camera to fit. You don't need to worry about taking too much off since you can hot glue the foam back together (the Amazon page for the foam has a video showing someone cut and glue the foam together which eased my thoughts).

I just finished it up and I'm pretty happy with it. The bag looks good (and the attachment points for the sling is actual metal, awesome), it cost $62 before tax, and I feel better about putting my camera in there. Though the foam itself is kinda ugly lol.

Future: I'm considering hot gluing cardboard around the foam to structure it further. My brother's friend also suggested covering the foam in fabric so it isn't as ugly though I feel like if I do it, it'll end up uglier than when I started.

TL;DR: Polyethylene Foam and Retropekt bag.
