Build time - A few hrs. Youll need a coping saw or dremmel, hole saws, a drill.

Materials - Everything is food grade plastic, stainless steel, or wood slathered in oil/wax. All was available at my local home depot and amazon.

Total Cost looks like $65 on the nose assuming you dont need to buy any tools

Tips

  • I did all stainless hardware to try and maximize food safety and b/c I read honey can break down zinc plating over time
  • Don't forget the wood on the underside of the barrel (2pcs .75in) or else it will bow and break from downward pressure
  • Make sure to use 4 pieces of wood in the bottom of the barrel, this allows (4pcs .75in) 3in of room at the bottom for honey to pool before you let it out of the gate. Without this space the spinner will get hung up on honey.
  • The hole in the 4th block is big enough for the bearing to fit through. The hole in the 3rd block under it is only big enough for the nut to fit through. This is where the bearing rests while you spin.
  • A friend to hold the sides is needed until it starts filling with honey.
  • I extract mine on top of a small ikea coffee table since it gets quite heavy when the bottom is full of honey. easier to spin on a step stool and then just let it flow from the honey gate into a 5gal bucket.
  • I dab honey in the bearing as lube
  • I wipe down all the wood parts inside with 3:2 Mineral oil/beeswax to keep honey from penetrating into the wood.
