The issue is how do you get it to France (or to Ireland for me) without paying a an absolute fortune and then also customs/import taxes?

There is a service by our national postal service to have stuff shipped to an address in the US but you get screwed on import taxes. I ordered some AirPods last year that were on sale in the States, ended up paying nearly the same price as I would have getting them from Amazon UK (but still slightly less than I would have paid here in Ireland if I bought them locally).
